The other way round

Most goal calculators ask for the date and hand you a SIP. This one asks for the SIP you can actually afford, counts the corpus you already have, and hands you the date. It is the honest version of goal planning when the monthly number is fixed by your salary rather than your ambition.

It runs month by month, so the answer is a real month count rather than a rounded year, and the year-wise table shows how the existing corpus and new SIP compound together.

Month-by-month simulation

value(m) = (value(m-1) + SIP) x (1 + r/12)   starting from the existing corpus\nStop at the first month where value >= target

Worked example: with Rs 5,00,000 already invested and a SIP of Rs 20,000 a month at 12%, a target of Rs 50,00,000 is reached in 103 months (8 years 7 months), after putting in a total of Rs 25,60,000.

Frequently asked questions

Should I inflate the target?

If the goal is a future cost (education, a house), yes: use the Inflation calculator to convert today's price into the future one, then enter that here.

What if I can step up the SIP every year?

The timeline shortens noticeably. Use the Step-up SIP calculator to see the corpus with yearly increases, or come back here with a higher average SIP.

Why does the result say the target is never reached?

At very low SIPs against very large targets, compounding alone may not close the gap within the 100-year limit the calculator uses. Raise the SIP or the existing corpus.

Does the existing corpus earn the same return?

Yes, the calculator assumes everything is invested at the rate you enter. If the existing money sits in an FD, enter a blended rate or move it.
