Plan like a mission: objective first
Every sound plan starts with the objective. “Invest ₹10,000 a month” is an activity; “₹1 crore for my daughter's education in 15 years” is a mission. This calculator turns your mission into a monthly number - and once a goal has a number and a date, it stops being a wish and becomes a plan you can execute on autopilot.
The formula behind the calculator
It inverts the standard SIP (annuity-due) formula to solve for the monthly instalment:
P = Target ÷ [ ((1 + i)^n − 1) / i × (1 + i) ]
i = annual return ÷ 12 ÷ 100 (monthly rate)
n = years × 12 (number of instalments)Worked example: to reach ₹1,00,00,000 in 15 years at 12%, the required SIP is about ₹19,819 per month. You invest roughly ₹35.7 lakh in total - the remaining ₹64+ lakh is compounding doing the heavy lifting.
Frequently asked questions
What does a SIP goal calculator do?
It works backwards from your target. Instead of asking how much a SIP will grow, you enter the amount you need and the time you have, and it tells you the monthly SIP required to reach it.
How much SIP do I need for ₹1 crore?
At an assumed 12% annual return over 15 years, a monthly SIP of about ₹19,819 reaches ₹1 crore. Over 20 years, the required amount drops sharply - time is your biggest ally.
What kind of goals should I plan this way?
Any goal with a number and a date: a child's education corpus, a home down payment, a retirement target, or a post-service business fund. Goal-first planning is exactly how we build client portfolios.
What if the required SIP is more than I can invest today?
Start with what you can and add an annual step-up so the instalment grows with your income - our Step-up SIP calculator shows how powerful that is. Extending the time horizon also reduces the required amount dramatically.
Is the result guaranteed?
No. The calculator assumes a constant rate of return for illustration. Actual mutual fund returns vary with markets. Mutual fund investments are subject to market risks; read all scheme related documents carefully.
