Assumes quarterly compounding, the common bank convention. FD interest is fully taxable at your slab rate; compare post-tax returns with inflation before parking long-term money here.

What FDs do well, and what they cannot

Fixed deposits offer certainty: a known rate, a known date, a known maturity value, with deposit insurance covering balances up to the prescribed limit per bank. For an emergency reserve or money needed within a couple of years, that certainty is exactly the point.

Their limits appear over longer horizons: interest is fully taxable at your slab rate, and post-tax returns frequently trail inflation, which means long-term money parked in FDs is quietly shrinking in real terms. Use this calculator for the maturity value, then compare honestly against inflation and alternatives.

How the calculation works

Maturity = P x (1 + r/4)^(4 x years)\nQuarterly compounding, the common bank convention

Worked example: Rs 1,00,000 at 7% for 5 years matures to about Rs 1,41,478, earning about Rs 41,478 of interest, taxable at your slab rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, fully, at your income slab rate, with TDS applicable beyond thresholds. This is the biggest drag on real FD returns for higher-bracket investors.

Are FDs completely safe?

Bank deposits are insured up to the prescribed limit per depositor per bank. For larger amounts, spreading across banks or using government-backed instruments adds safety.

FD or debt mutual fund?

FDs give certainty; debt funds offer liquidity, potentially better tax treatment on longer holdings, and market-linked returns. The right choice depends on horizon and tax bracket; we compare them for clients routinely.

Does compounding frequency matter much?

Modestly. Quarterly compounding, used here, yields slightly more than annual at the same nominal rate.

Right tool, right job.
