CAGR is the single yearly rate that turns the initial value into the final value, smoothing out the ups and downs in between. Use it to compare investments held for different periods.

The honest yardstick for any return

"It doubled" means nothing without the years attached: doubling in five years is excellent, doubling in fifteen is mediocre. CAGR, the compound annual growth rate, converts any start value, end value and period into the single yearly rate that would produce that journey, making property, gold, funds and that tip from a friend directly comparable.

It is also the fastest lie detector in personal finance. Run the numbers on any impressive-sounding investment story and the annualised truth appears in one line.

The CAGR formula

CAGR = (Final / Initial)^(1 / years) - 1

Worked example: an investment that grew from Rs 1,00,000 to Rs 3,00,000 in 10 years, a 3x multiple, works out to a CAGR of about 11.61% per year.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good CAGR?

Context decides: comfortably above inflation is the minimum bar for long-term money. Indian equity has historically delivered low double digits over long periods; fixed income sits lower with less volatility.

Does CAGR show the bumps along the way?

No, and that is its point: it smooths the journey into one comparable rate. Two investments with identical CAGR can have very different volatility.

How do I measure returns on a SIP?

SIPs have money entering at many dates, so the correct measure is XIRR rather than simple CAGR. Your portfolio statements from us report XIRR.

Can CAGR be negative?

Yes. If the final value is below the initial value, CAGR is negative, an annualised rate of loss.
